The Philadelphia Union experienced some growing pains during their expansion season last year. In 2011, the Union look to use experience and new players in order to challenge for a playoff spot and make some noise in the MLS' Eastern Conference.

Union Sign Goalkeeper Mondragon

The main problem the Union had during its inaugural season was keeping opponents from finding the back of the net. In order to remedy this problem, the Union released goalkeepers Chris Seitz and Brad Knighton and signed Faryd Mondragon, who spent the last four seasons at FC Cologne of the German Bundesliga. The 39-year-old Colombian international has also spent significant time playing in the top leagues in Colombia, Spain, Argentina and Turkey. He has also been capped 50 times for the Colombian national team.

With their first-round pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, the Union selected goalkeeper Zac MacMath from the University of Maryland. Macmath will come in to back up Mondragon and looks to be the club's future at goalkeeper. MacMath also served as the goalkeeper for the U.S. U-20 squad. He was a first-team All-ACC selection and, during his three years at Maryland, posted a 0.65 goals against average.
