Picnic areas are not uncommon sights along hiking trails, especially on popular trails or trails near metropolitan areas. Whether at the trailhead, or farther back in the woods, picnic areas offer hikers a chance to rest in some shade. For families or organized groups, picnic areas provide a place to gather, enjoy a meal, and each other’s company.

Planning Ahead to Use a Picnic Area

If planning a hiking day, do some research ahead of time to determine what picnic areas are available. Go online and visit the website of the land manager that maintains the trail. It may have information about the kinds of picnic areas available, how many people they can accommodate, what other facilities are nearby (such as restrooms), and whether or not a group needs a reservation. If a reservation is needed, call ahead of time to reserve a spot. Depending on the land manager, a large group may have to pay a reservation fee.
